Iraq to Turkey Flights: The Biggest Arab Travel Corridor Nobody Writes About
Iraq sends more visitors to Turkey than Saudi Arabia does. The routes, the carriers, and the four calendar windows that actually move the fare.
Short answer
Iraq is now the largest Arab source market for travel to Turkey. In April 2026 Iraq sent 60,625 visitors, ahead of Saudi Arabia’s 27,305 and more than triple Egypt’s 18,114. The main routes are Erbil, Baghdad and Sulaymaniyah to Istanbul, flown by Turkish Airlines, Iraqi Airways and Fly Baghdad, and the fare pattern is driven by the Iraqi summer and school calendar rather than the European one.
If you fly this corridor you already know it is busy. What is less well known is that it is now the biggest Arab travel flow into Turkey, and it is still growing: April 2026’s 60,625 visitors was up around fifteen per cent on March’s 52,690.
That matters practically, because it means the pricing on these routes does not behave the way general Turkey advice suggests. Guides written for European travellers tell you to avoid August. On the Iraq corridor, the calendar that moves the fare is a different one.

Two structural points worth understanding. First, Turkish Airlines connects onward, so an Istanbul ticket is often also the cheapest way to reach Europe from Iraq. Second, Iraqi Airways and Fly Baghdad price point-to-point, so on a pure Istanbul trip they are frequently the better fare and worth checking separately rather than assuming the network carrier wins.
When to go, and when it gets expensive
The demand shape on this corridor is not the European one.
The four windows that move fares
- Mid-June to end of August. The Iraqi summer. Temperatures at home push families out and this is the hard peak. Book eight to twelve weeks ahead, not four.
- Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha. Short, sharp and very expensive. Both are moon-dependent, so watch the announcement rather than a printed calendar.
- Newroz, around 21 March. Specific to the Kurdistan Region and a genuine spike on the Erbil and Sulaymaniyah routes. European guides never mention it.
- The Arbaeen window in July 2027. Not a Turkey event, but it competes for the same aircraft and the same airport capacity across Iraq. See our Arbaeen 2027 guide.
The cheapest realistic windows are late September to mid-November and February to early March. Istanbul is pleasant in both and the Black Sea coast is still workable in the first.
Where Iraqi travellers actually go in Turkey
Istanbul is the gateway, but it is frequently not the destination.
- Trabzon. The Black Sea summer. Cool, green, mountainous, and specifically popular with Gulf and Iraqi families escaping the heat. Uzungöl is the anchor. This is a family trip, not a nightlife trip, and the hotel requirements are different: connecting rooms, kitchenettes, halal dining.
- Antalya. The Mediterranean resort market. Better served by all-inclusive properties and a longer season.
- Bursa and Sapanca. Short additions from Istanbul, popular for the same family-summer reason as Trabzon.
- Istanbul itself. Shopping, medical travel and business, year round.
If Trabzon is the plan, the flight question changes: most travellers fly into Istanbul and connect, so price the through-ticket rather than two separate bookings.
Entry requirements
Turkey operates an electronic visa system, and eligibility and conditions are set by passport nationality. Iraqi passport holders generally use the e-visa route, with requirements that can include holding a valid visa or residence permit from a third country, and those conditions have changed more than once.

Practical booking notes
- Compare the point-to-point carriers separately. On Istanbul-only trips, Iraqi Airways and Fly Baghdad frequently undercut the network fare.
- Price Erbil and Baghdad against each other if you can reach both. The road between the Kurdistan cities and the fare gap on the day sometimes justifies the drive.
- Fly mid-week. Thursday and Friday departures on this corridor carry a consistent premium.
- Book the visa before the fare. The cheapest tickets are the least changeable, which is the wrong combination when an entry condition is unresolved.
