Flying Out of Erbil: Every Route, Every Airline, and the Calendar That Sets the Price

Written from Erbil outwards rather than from the outside in. Including Newroz, which no European travel guide has ever mentioned.

Short answer

Erbil (EBL) is the Kurdistan Region’s main international gateway. Its densest route by far is Istanbul, on Turkish Airlines and Iraqi Airways. Dubai and Amman are the next two, and SalamAir added Muscat from October 2026, which opens a new one-stop path across the Gulf. The seasonality is Kurdish, not European: Newroz around 21 March and the mid-June to August summer are the two windows that move the fare.

Erbil is an origin market, not a destination that people happen to leave from. That distinction matters, because almost everything written about flying to and from Iraq is written from the outside in.

This page is written from Erbil outwards.

Where you can actually fly

Route Typical carriers Why people fly it
EBL → IST Istanbul Turkish Airlines, Iraqi Airways The dominant route. Leisure, shopping, medical travel, and the connecting gateway to Europe.
EBL → DXB Dubai Gulf carriers, Iraqi Airways Business, trade, onward connections east, and family travel.
EBL → AMM Amman Regional carriers Medical travel above all, plus business and onward Levant connections.
EBL → MCT Muscat SalamAir, from October 2026 New. Opens a cheaper one-stop path across the Gulf and into the Indian Ocean.
EBL → DOH / EBL → other Gulf Gulf carriers Network connections onward, often better priced than a direct long-haul.

Two structural facts shape every fare on this list.

Turkish Airlines is the network carrier here. If your destination is anywhere in Europe or North America, the Istanbul routing is usually both the cheapest and the most frequent, and it is worth pricing as a single ticket rather than as Erbil to Istanbul plus a separate onward leg.

Iraqi Airways prices point to point. On a pure Istanbul, Dubai or Amman trip it is frequently cheaper than the network fare, and it should always be checked separately rather than assumed to be the expensive option.

The calendar that moves the price

If you plan an Erbil departure using generic advice about European travel seasons, you will book at the wrong time.

The four windows

  • Newroz, around 21 March. The Kurdish new year and the single most distinctive spike in the Kurdistan aviation calendar. Demand comes from both directions: families travelling home and families travelling out. No European guide mentions it.
  • Mid-June to end of August. The summer exodus. Istanbul and Trabzon absorb most of it. Book eight to twelve weeks ahead.
  • Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha. Short, sharp, expensive, and moon-dependent, so watch the announcement rather than a printed calendar.
  • Late July 2027, the Arbaeen window. Not a Kurdistan event, but it loads the entire Iraqi aviation system and competes for the same aircraft. See our Arbaeen 2027 guide.

The genuinely cheap windows are late September to mid-November and January to early March, avoiding Newroz.

Erbil, Sulaymaniyah or Baghdad

If you can reach more than one airport, price them against each other. It regularly changes the answer.

  • Erbil has the most international capacity in the Region and the most competition, which usually means the best fares.
  • Sulaymaniyah (ISU) is thinner. Fewer seats means less elastic pricing, so booking early matters more there than it does at Erbil.
  • Baghdad (BGW) has the highest total capacity and the most carriers, including Fly Baghdad and expanding Gulf service. The road journey is long, but on a family booking the fare gap sometimes justifies it.

Practical notes

  • Fly mid-week. Thursday and Friday departures carry a consistent premium on these routes.
  • Check baggage allowance, not just the fare. On diaspora and family routes the excess baggage bill routinely exceeds the saving on a cheaper ticket.
  • Settle entry requirements before you buy. Turkey’s rules for Iraqi passport holders are set by nationality and have changed more than once; confirm on the official Turkish portal. The corridor detail is in our Iraq to Turkey guide.
  • Price the through-ticket when connecting. Separate legs cost more and leave you unprotected on a delay.

Compare live fares from Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and Baghdad side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you fly direct from Erbil?

Istanbul is the densest route, on Turkish Airlines and Iraqi Airways. Dubai and Amman follow, and SalamAir added Muscat from October 2026. Gulf carriers provide onward network connections.

What is the cheapest time to fly out of Erbil?

Late September to mid-November, and January to early March avoiding Newroz. The expensive windows are Newroz around 21 March, mid-June to the end of August, and both Eids.

Why do Erbil fares spike in March?

Newroz, the Kurdish new year, around 21 March. Demand rises in both directions as families travel home and travel out. It is specific to the Kurdistan Region and generic travel guides do not mention it.

Is it cheaper to fly from Erbil or Baghdad?

It varies by route and date, which is why both should be priced. Erbil has the most international competition in the Region. Baghdad has the highest total capacity and more carriers. Sulaymaniyah is thinner, so booking early matters more there.

Should I book Erbil to Istanbul and my onward flight separately?

Usually not. Turkish Airlines is the network carrier here and a single through-ticket to your final destination is generally cheaper and protects you if the first leg is delayed. For a trip that ends in Istanbul, check Iraqi Airways separately, as point-to-point pricing often undercuts the network fare.
