Arbaeen 2027: The Date, the Visa, and Why Beds Matter More Than Flights
Expected around 24 July 2027. Published eleven months early, because the visa queue and the Karbala room stock are the two things you cannot fix at the last minute.
Short answer
Arbaeen 2027 is expected to fall around 24 July 2027. That is a prediction, not an announcement: the date is set by the Islamic calendar and confirmed by moon sighting, so it can move by a day or two. If you intend to go, the two things worth doing now are the Iraq Ziyara visa, which is applied for online, and Najaf beds, which are the constraint. Karbala has no airport.
Arbaeen is one of the largest annual gatherings of people anywhere on earth. Estimates run up to twenty million pilgrims converging on Karbala, most of them walking the eighty kilometres from Najaf. It is larger than Hajj in raw numbers, it happens every year, and almost nobody has written down how to arrange it properly if you are starting from the Gulf.
This page is the practical version. It is published early on purpose. If you are reading it in 2026, you have time to do this calmly rather than in the panic of the last three weeks.
The date, and why we are careful with it
Arbaeen falls on the twentieth of Safar, forty days after Ashura. Converted to the Gregorian calendar:

We are not going to print that as a fixed date, because it is not one. Hijri dates are confirmed by observation shortly beforehand and every year some published calendars are a day out. Plan against the window, not the day: the third and fourth weeks of July 2027 is the period to hold.
The walk itself is not a single day. Pilgrims move over roughly a fortnight leading up to Arbaeen, so accommodation and transport pressure builds from about ten days out and peaks in the final three.
The visa: apply online, and do it early
Iraq operates a dedicated Ziyara visa through its electronic visa system, covering visits to the shrines at Najaf, Karbala and Samarra. It is applied for online with a passport and a photograph.
What to know about processing
- There are two processing tiers. The faster one is quoted at roughly 6 to 72 hours; the slower one at 8 to 18 business days. Which tier you fall into depends on your nationality.
- Assume the slower tier unless you have confirmed otherwise. Building a plan on a 72-hour turnaround and then discovering you are in the 18-day queue three weeks before Arbaeen is the single most common way this trip goes wrong.
- The Ziyara visa is a pilgrimage visa. It is the right category for this trip; a general tourist application is not.
- Apply through Iraq’s official e-visa channel. Confirm the current portal and fee at the time you apply, because both change.

Getting there: Najaf is the airport, not Karbala
Karbala has no commercial airport. Every arriving pilgrim comes through one of these:

The realistic advice: hold Najaf, but price Baghdad in parallel. Najaf sells out and prices move hard in the final fortnight. A Baghdad arrival with a road transfer is frequently cheaper and more available, and the transfer is a well-worn route with established operators.
Beds are the constraint, not seats
Flights can be added. Karbala cannot add rooms. In the peak window the city absorbs a volume of visitors far beyond its hotel stock, and a very large share of pilgrims stay in mawkib, the volunteer-run service tents and halls that line the route and fill the city.
What that means for planning:
- If you want a hotel room in Karbala for the peak days, book it months ahead. Not weeks. This is not a market where waiting improves the price.
- Najaf is the pressure valve. Rooms in Najaf are more available, and many pilgrims base there and travel in.
- Shoulder the dates. Arriving eight to ten days before Arbaeen and walking gives you a materially easier accommodation problem than arriving three days before.
A realistic timeline for Arbaeen 2027
- Now to early 2027: confirm your visa tier. Reserve refundable accommodation in Najaf.
- March to April 2027: book flights. Najaf first, Baghdad as the parallel option.
- May 2027: submit the Ziyara visa if you are in the slower tier.
- June 2027: submit if you are in the faster tier. Confirm accommodation.
- Early July 2027: watch for the confirmed date announcement and adjust by a day if needed.

We are not publishing a fixed 2027 date, a visa fee, or a hotel price. The date is moon-dependent. The fee changes and is set by Iraq, not by us. Karbala room rates in the peak window are volatile enough that any figure we printed today would be misleading by next summer.
