What has changed is the border itself: the Entry\/Exit System began a phased rollout on 12 October 2025 and is what is causing the longer queues people are reporting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Two European systems get confused constantly, and only one of them is actually affecting your trip right now.<\/p>\n<h2>EES: the one that exists<\/h2>\n<p>The Entry\/Exit System replaces passport stamping with biometric registration &#8211; face and fingerprints &#8211; at the external Schengen border. It started a progressive rollout on 12 October 2025 with full implementation targeted for 10 April 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The practical effect for a UAE traveller is time. First registration takes longer than a stamp, and at busy airports that has produced the queues making the news through 2026. EU updates have acknowledged that operation may be partially suspended at peak travel times even after full rollout, precisely to manage this.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing is required of you in advance. Build in more connection time, and expect the first entry after the system reaches your airport to be the slow one. Subsequent entries are faster because your biometrics are already on file.<\/p>\n<h2>ETIAS: the one that keeps not arriving<\/h2>\n<p>ETIAS is the planned pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationalities, conceptually similar to the UK&#8217;s ETA. It has been announced, delayed, re-announced and delayed again. The EU Council indicated a target of the final quarter of 2026, subject to European Parliament approval, and later 2026 coverage describes that date slipping out of view as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As of 24 August 2026 it is not in force and you do not need one.<\/strong> Its start is tied to EES being fully bedded in, and EES has had a rough rollout, so the sensible expectation is later rather than sooner.<\/p>\n<p>Be careful here: there are commercial sites that will happily sell you an &#8220;ETIAS application&#8221; for a system that does not exist. There is nothing to apply for.<\/p>\n<h2>What UAE passport holders actually need today<\/h2>\n<div class=\"hh-key\">\n<h3>Schengen, Emirati passport, August 2026<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Visa:<\/strong> none. Visa-free under the EU-UAE waiver<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay:<\/strong> 90 days within any rolling 180-day period<\/li>\n<li><strong>ETIAS:<\/strong> not required, not launched<\/li>\n<li><strong>At the border:<\/strong> biometric registration under EES where it has rolled out<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ireland:<\/strong> not in Schengen &#8211; check its rules separately<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>If you are a UAE resident on another passport<\/h2>\n<p>The waiver is between the EU and the UAE, and it covers UAE nationals. It does not extend to residents holding Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian or other passports, who need a Schengen visa applied for through the consulate of their main destination country.
